The process still is far from complete, but a league source indicated last night the Celtics were moving closer to a deal for Minnesota star Kevin Garnett. It was further indicated that if such a deal goes down, it would indeed involve both Al Jefferson and the Celtics' No. 5 overall pick in next week's draft.

Jay Williams, who is trying to revive his career after a motorcycle accident three years ago, signed with the New Jersey Nets on Thursday.

Terms of the contract were not immediately available, but the deal is not guaranteed. It does allow Williams, a point guard, to try out for the Nets during training camp. He is considered a bit of a longshot to make the team.

Jason Kidd is the Nets' starting point guard, and Marcus Williams, the team's first-round draft pick, is expected to back him up.

Nets president Rod Thorn said earlier this week that the accident has taken away some of Williams' athleticism, but he can make up for that with his knowledge of the game.

"Remarkable young man to get to this point," Thorn said. "Nobody outworks him. He's got a tremendous attitude. He's a guy that everybody roots for the kind of person that he is. He believes he'll make it back. And we're certainly hopeful that he will, too."

Originally drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls, Williams averaged 9.5 points, 4.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.15 steals in 75 contests during the 2002-03 season. He was named to the NBA's All-Rookie Second Team.

Williams' career appeared to end on June 19, 2003, when he crashed his recently bought motorcycle into a light pole in Chicago, fracturing his pelvis and tearing knee ligaments and suffering nerve damage in his left leg. He was hospitalized for 3½ months.

The Bulls eventually bought out his contract for about $3 million.

The Blazers were really horrible this year. They're just too young. Watching them tonight against Phoenix was like watching a high school team play a college team: they're from totally different worlds. I'm not sure what good it'll do to add another young player -- Morrison, Thomas, Bargnani, or Aldridge -- since Portland will still be extremely young.

The sad part is Portland's most impressive players are its younger players. Even in tonight's loss Webster, Khryapa, Outlaw, Jack and Telfair looked good, while the veterans -- Blake, Dixon, Skinner, Lenard, and even Ratliff -- looked expendable. Miles and Randolph didn't play tonight and haven't for a few games now. They're not only expendable, but should be moved this off season. Yet, with their contracts, is that even possible? Who wants them?

Portland did everything this year a bad team should do: no one passed, no one rebounded consistantly, terrible defense, tons of unforced turnovers, and worst of all the team had trouble scoring the ball. Webster and Telfair seemed to turn the ball over often and perhaps this is because of their youth, yet Miles and Randolph are perhaps the worst. Outlaw often looked out of control. Webster, who will probably be our best player next year, is perhaps taking on too much at once, trying to do everything.

Frustrating! I can't even get going on the owner and management. Everything needs to change. How did it get this bad?

Ugh. I guess I still like the coach.

PHOENIX—In a press conference Wednesday, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo announced that Kobe Bryant has been selected as the 2008 men's Olympic basketball team.

"When they put me in charge of the selection process, I promised the committee that I would not assemble a collection of selfish, self-centered superstars with no team concept," said Colangelo, referring to the every-man-for-himself Olympic team that finished an embarrassing third place in Athens two years ago. I am confident that, with a team comprised entirely of Kobe Bryant, the infighting, ego-clashing, and divisiveness that plagued the 2004 team will not be a problem."

Dubbing Bryant the "Dream Individual," Colangelo said that, by eliminating such weaknesses as the presence of coaches and other players, Bryant will be able to reach his full potential.

"Kobe has already been working hard during the regular season to get accustomed to being the sole contributor of a basketball team," Colangelo said. "If he, and USA basketball, want any chance of winning the gold in Beijing, he's going to have to play the game as if he's the only one on the court. Anyone who knows basketball will tell you it will be an easy adjustment."

During the press conference, Bryant told members of the media that he was "honored" and "not surprised" to be chosen as the Olympic team.

"I have to tell you, I'm not in any way humbled by this moment—this is what I've been working towards my whole career, from entering the NBA draft right out of high school to getting Shaq traded away to my 81-point game," Bryant said. "I'm used to it. I know that if I don't bring my A-game on any given night during the regular season, the Lakers will be in trouble. The same applies to the U.S. Olympic squad, where I am, more so than ever, the most indispensable player on the team."

Bryant added that he is also working on a special new kind of jump shot that is "indefensible and can only be done by me."

Commissioner David Stern applauded the decision to select "only one greedy, self-serving, ball-hogging, stat-padding superstar instead of the usual 20," saying that Bryant's behavior both on and off the court is an accurate reflection of the current state of American basketball.

"Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest individual talents in the game, and we're proud to have him represent our country, our sport, and the 28 or so other deserving individual talents who were vying for a spot on the roster," Stern said. "Kobe may not be a great team player, but we think he will be a great team."

"Besides, 81 points beats a lot of teams, especially foreign ones," Stern added.

Bryant was scheduled to begin training with personal coaches Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Karl Malone this week, but, in the true spirit of his new role as Olympic team captain, head coach, and lone member, he has opted to prepare for the tournament on his own time without anyone's assistance. Starting at the end of the 2005-2006 NBA season, Bryant will practice tip-offs, work on fundamental self-inbound passes, learn how to play defense, and draw up several play formations, each of which he will be responsible for calling during the games.

Although the general response among fans has been complete indifference, many players around the league have objected to the decision, saying that it is unfair to others who have worked just as hard as Bryant.

"Kobe Bryant shouldn't be the only one allowed to represent our country at the Summer Games," Sixers point guard Allen Iverson said. "I should be the only one allowed to represent our country at the Summer Games."

LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, Jermaine O'Neal, Tracy McGrady and Tim Duncan all expressed identical reactions.

I mean here is a dude who thought (and maybe rightfully so) his wife was in danger from a fan. There are plenty of nutbars out there. He does the protector thing and checks out his business. I can understand if rules are made then penalties must be given out. But the dude was calm, in control and non confrontational. 5 games is too much in my mind. Perhaps the league should look at providing better security for wives of players as they are the people in attendance whose business in the stands will definitely affect the players business on the court.

I mean if you had big money on a game, what would stop you from paying some jerk to harass a players wife in the first quarter hoping to get said player ejected. If I thought of this u know someone who needs a payoff is thinking it too.

December 8, 2005 | Onion Sports

NEW YORK—Larry Brown, whose Knicks are currently struggling in the National Basketball Association, vowed that his team will make the playoffs, though he is "not yet sure where." "My guys are all very versatile athletes, and although they I know they prefer basketball, the NBA is very competitive this year. Even if it means playing a whole new sport for the rest of the season, I have faith that my team can make it to a postseason," said Brown, who has a reputation for getting his team to "play the right way," and claims he knows how to play soccer and Australian-style football the right way, too. "I think that the MLS or the World Rugby League would be a particularly good fit for the Knicks, and give New York an excellent shot at some kind of national, international, or state championship. Don't count us out—we'll still be around come June, October, March, or January, depending." Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury said he will do anything to finally get a ring, trophy, cup, or plaque, just as long as he doesn't have to play point guard.

It's completely free for anyone who has a Yahoo! account, and all I ask is that you update your lineup on a regular basis. You can even toggle your settings to let the commish (me) do so, and don't worry, I wouldn't screw you by benching Shaq in favor of Olowokantplay. I want to fill out all the slots and set up the auto pick draft as quickly as possible. Here's the info:

...to the Hawks in a sign and trade, with the Suns getting Boris Diaw and two first round picks. Johnson is a solid talent, but is he worth two first rounders? And to play him at point guard, where he's an unproven commodity? A weird move by a franchise with no direction (and a gaping hole in the middle of the paint):

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 08/01/05

The Hawks and the Phoenix Suns have nearly finalized a sign-and-trade deal that would send guard Joe Johnson to Atlanta for Boris Diaw and two lottery-protected first-round draft picks, according to three people familiar with the negotiations.

The deal would include Atlanta sending to Phoenix a trade exception somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 million. The trade could be completed as early as Tuesday, when the moratorium on signing free agents is lifted.

Johnson would first sign a contract with the Suns, an estimated five-year, $70 million deal front-loaded in the first year with a salary reportedly in the $20 million range. Then he would be traded to the Hawks for Diaw, a two-year veteran from France who has not lived up to expectations

Johnson told ESPN.com last week that he asked Suns managing owner Robert Sarver not to match the Hawks' contract offer. Prior to Sunday the Suns had maintained their summer-long stance that they would match any offers made to their restricted free agent star.

But not only was Johnson intent on joining the Hawks, he admitted to being intrigued by the prospect of playing point guard, the spot the Hawks have targeted for the 6-foot-8, 230-pound combo guard.

Johnson, 24, averaged 17.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season playing in the backcourt with league MVP Steve Nash.

If he remained in Phoenix he'd have had to continue playing in the shadow of Nash and fellow All-Stars Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire, who's expected to receive a maximum contract extension that would begin at the start of the 2006-07 season.

In addition to being the Hawks' highest paid player, he'd also be the team's only bona fide star, leading an eager young group that includes Josh Childress, Josh Smith and rookies Marvin Williams and Salim Stoudamire as well as veteran forward Al Harrington, who is entering the final year of his contract.

The sign-and-trade deal ensures that the Suns receive compensation for losing one of the most important components of their league-best 62-win team from this past season.

Diaw, a 6-8 guard/forward selected with the 21st pick in the 2003 draft, averaged 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game last season for the 13-69 Hawks. In two seasons, he averaged 4.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists while starting 61 of 142 games he played.

More crucial than the loss of Diaw for the Hawks would be the loss of the draft picks, an integral part of the franchise's rebuilding plan.
