it's B R people

topic posted Thu, November 24, 2005 - 11:04 PM by
on this thanksgiving, I want to give thanks for BILL RUSSELL !

if i hear one more knuckle head, i.e. charles barkely on TNT tonight, talk about how Michael Jordan is the greatest player ever, i am seriously going to PUKE.

folks, it's Bill Russell.
period.
hands down.
end of story.

the man went 2 for 4 in college,
leading USF to the NCAA title in his jr. and sr. years.
led the olympic team to the gold medal in 56,
and then went on to win 11 NBA titles in 13 years with Boston.
can you say "MORE RINGS THAN FINGERS" people ?
in the team sport of basketball, the only measure is
winning, and NOBODY won more than Bill Russell.
period.
end of story.

plus his legacy of standing up for and fighting for social justice,
in a NOTORIOUSLY racist town, far supercedes mj's
endevaours into baseball, golf, and gambling.
let's talk about Boston playing in Kentucky ...
anyone remember who was there consulting Ali
upon his boycott of the draft and the vietnam war ?

nuff said ...

so everybody,
you better start representing for Bill to the M-Fin' R !

:-]

Happy Thanksgiving

    whatever dude

you wanna see a modern day Bill Russell? look no further than minnesota

if kevin garnett played in the fifties/sixties, he'd be the undisputed greatest player in the history of the game

but he's playing the modern era and has the unfortunate possibility of sinking into mainstream obscurity simply because he hasn't won a championship

Bill did have the seriously good fortune to be surrounded
with good players, something K.G. has clearly not had the luxury of...

      do i sense a F*&*^pants "man-crush" here ?

I'm going to look for the modern day Bill at USF vs. Texas Tech Sat !

          props to bill though

          i ain't dissin

it's just that you can't compare between eras. maybe bill would've been a lot more dominant if he had today's competition. maybe mj never woulda fought through all the racism in the fifties

          you can't compare

I gotta give props to Russell, the cat was the straw that stirred those Celtic drinks. He might not have been the offensive force that Wilt was, or as flashy or dynamic as others who would follow, but he did nothing but win. I've read a few of his bios where different writers would comment on his ability to block a shot, but he wouldn't swat it into the cheap seats, he'd tip it and grab it himself. That in itself is an art that about .03% of big men in the history of the game have mastered. If you base greatness on winning, he's the measuring stick.

walton stated during the knicks-pistons game tonight,
that his all-time starting 5 would be :

        bill russell at center
        bird and mchale at forwards
        jordan and magic at guard

        not too shabby ...

i understand BR has made Seattle his home ever since
              he coached the sonics ...

Bobby Knight got his hat handed to him tonight by the USF Dons !
word to all your grandmothers !
all the cocktails at da Hukilau probably excepted
security from letting me anywhere near Bob !
War memorial Gym is such a phreakin' small place too,
              bastages

and thank god for the Pig & Whistle who throws down FREE BEER
for a half an hour after USF home games with your ticket stub...
o.k. so its' bud light, but it's FREE BEER and there were tons of
              cool basketball geeks there too

the pig 'n whistle is the only chain i've ever loved to drink at. there's one in new york just off of times square. cheapest booze for twenty (long) blocks and believe you me it attracts the "right" type of folks too

half an hour. my god. that's one of those deals where you get one and then immediately get back in line again.

i'll try to get an FP/BR original shot next time i happen upon a game

I just heard Shaq credit Bill Russell with telling him a few days ago
in Seattle that it he oughta shake Kobe's hand and mend the
fence with him ... Shaq had asked him if he ever hated or didn't
get along with any of his opponents over his career. BR had said,
nope, not ever. Nice to see Shaq take BR's advice,
ESPECIALLY here on MLK day. Peace everyone.

There will never be another Bill Russell, but the league has changed so much with a longer schedule, farther road trips, and the addition of more teams. In the modern era of the NBA, I don't think anyone will able to win 11 rings as a player. On top of all that, he won despite all racism he and his family had to go through. In my hall of fame he stands next to Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, and Muhammad Ali.
